The Fire and the Ice

The fire and the ice,
They fought one day,
On a Chemistry countertop.
It was Saturday, so
There was nobody there
To tell them they had to stop.

The ice was solid, each atom held
In rigid harmony.
The fire was a pure expression of
Combustion energy.

The fire lept forward -
The ice held fast –
(though its molecules grew very hot -
each particle aching to escape
the fire and its brutal onslaught)
The fire, it danced around the ice,
Savagely tearing asunder
The pattern of bonds the molecules formed
To form the solid ice structure.

But look –
What do we see –
The fire is losing power –

The ice absorbs the fire's white heat
And turns them both to water!
